Computer Science

Welcome to the Computer Science Department — where innovation, creativity, and problem-solving come to life! Our high school program introduces students to the exciting world of technology, from the basics of coding to advanced topics like artificial intelligence, game development, and cybersecurity.

Vision

Our vision is that all learners at OBA will be provided with the opportunities, knowledge and experience to access 21st century employability, by being a successful digital citizen and having an ambitious career choice.

Curriculum overview

We follow the National Centre for Computing Education/Teach Computing model curriculum, a nationally recognised framework that ensures students receive a high-quality, well-structured computing education. Our teachers thoughtfully adapt these materials to meet the specific needs and interests of our students and local community, making learning both relevant and engaging. In order to boost students’ digital literacy skills and development, we also run a series of lessons in year 7 whereby students cover traditional ICT content for one hour each fortnight. More information on this can be found here.

Students learn through hands-on projects, interactive lessons, and real-world challenges. Whether you’re designing your first website, programming a robot, or exploring how apps are made, you’ll gain valuable skills that prepare you for the future.

A standout feature of our department is our collaboration with the Science & Technology Facility Council’s Daresbury Laboratory, one of the UK’s leading science and innovation campuses. Through this partnership, students engage with real scientists and engineers, take part in workshops, and see how computer science is applied in cutting-edge research and industry.

With passionate teachers, modern facilities, and extracurricular opportunities — including coding clubs, competitions, and career-focused events — we offer a supportive and inspiring environment for all learners. Whether you’re just starting out or already dreaming of a tech career, there’s a place for you in Computer Science.

Once students reach KS4, we have the option for students to study two different pathways, a BTEC in Digital Information Technology or an OCR Computer Science. Both of these courses offer the students the opportunity to understand how technology is applied in the working world, with one being more coursework based and the second offering an opportunity for two exams, one of which involves coding. More details of the topics included for this can be found in the learning journeys below.
